OW Newsletters and E-Shots
The Michaelmas Term has started here at the School, and it is time for a quick update:
RIP – Graham Garrett (Headmaster 1973 – 1993)
We are very sorry to report that former Headmaster Graham Garrett passed away peacefully on Sunday 15th September. There will be a private family funeral, and the family is planning a Thanksgiving Service in Cambridge. The School will be speaking to the family about us holding a Memorial Service in the School Chapel in due course – details to follow in a separate Eshot. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife Jill and to their children Caroline, John and Alison.
At 2.15pm on Saturday, 9th November we shall be holding a memorial service in the Chapel for Mickey Prall (JS staff, 1964-2002). The tributes will be led by his former colleagues, Robin Hickling and Richard Dyson.
We would like to give Mickey a splendid send-off and hope the service will be well attended. For catering and admin purposes, please can you let me know by THURSDAY, 31st OCTOBER if you would like to attend.
During the service we intend to read out a few memories of Mickey and also display a few photos of him at the School. If you can help either way, or if you would like to say a few words yourself at the service, do please let me know.
The Thatched Pavilion Appeal
As we mentioned in last term’s OW Newsletter, the School is raising funds to refurbish the iconic Thatched Pavilion in this, its 90th anniversary year. Thanks to the support of various OWs and charitable trusts, we have raised 90% of the funds and we need just another £5,000. Any further help would be greatly appreciated. The intention is that all gifts of £425 and over will be recorded for posterity on a plaque inside the restored Pavilion. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to help.
Over the summer holiday the thatched roof was refurbished, and when you next visit the School please don’t be too shocked if you spot a straw kangaroo on the ridge!

The OW Survey
We are very interested to hear your thoughts on what you think the OW Club should be trying to achieve (for its members like you and for the School) over the next year. Here is a link to a short online survey – we would really value your feedback! (Thanks to those who have already completed the survey).
News from the Archives Room
As reported in last term’s OW Newsletter, the School is asking for support in covering the cost of bringing Murray Witham’s slide collection back to life by digitising the slides. We have already found some wonderful images in the collection. Any donations would be much appreciated!
And, we are trying to obtain digital recordings of Carol Services from the mid-1960s. Again, please shout if you think you could help.
And finally…. The NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE
Since my last Eshot, the School has submitted a planning application to build a single-storey Sixth Form Centre on the roof of the Dining Hall. If this gets the green light, this will require the biggest fundraising effort in more than 30 years. The School will be asking OWs to help in any way we can, especially as there are such challenging times ahead for independent schools.
Neil Lyon (Foundation Director) will be spearheading the fundraising, and he would be very pleased to hear from you if you have experience of fundraising campaigns elsewhere and / or thoughts on how the School might fund such an ambitious and vital project: email@example.com
