Small Scouts Ready for a Big Adventure

Welcome to the Squirrel Scouts Drey

There is a new buzz of excitement in the air at Wellingborough School, as we proudly launch our very own Squirrel Scouts Drey. A wonderful introduction to the world of Scouting designed especially for our Reception pupils. Open to children aged 4 to 6, this new initiative invites our youngest learners to embark on a journey filled with adventure.

Every Tuesday from 15:30 to 16:30 during term time, the Lower Prep Music Classroom will transform into a hub of energy and imagination. From the very first session, it was clear that the enthusiasm was infectious. Mr Rickett-Browne, our Group Lead Volunteer, shared his delight at the inaugural meeting:

“We had a lot of very excited and energetic squirrels join us for our first session who couldn’t stop talking about it before the session and the following day. It was a delight to see them engage with the leaders and each other during that first session, and I am looking forward to watching our section grow from here on up.”

Ms Evans, the Squirrels Lead Volunteer who led the first session, echoed that excitement:

“Our very first Squirrels session was bursting with excitement and energy! From the moment the children arrived, you could feel their enthusiasm. Watching them connect so naturally with our leaders and with one another was wonderful, and it made for such a positive start to our new adventure together.

Over the coming weeks, we will be diving into all sorts of activities, from arts and crafts to Scouting games and outdoor adventures, all designed to help our young people ‘Be Prepared’ for whatever comes next in school, Scouting, and beyond.

I wanted to get involved with Squirrels because I really enjoy working with the younger years and helping them build confidence as they start their Scouting journey. It’s a great way to get to know them better before they move up into the Upper Prep and to support them as they take their first steps in learning new skills, making friends, and discovering what Scouting is all about. Seeing their excitement and curiosity during this first session reminded me exactly why I wanted to be part of it.”

The Squirrel Scouts Drey will follow the traditional Scouting model, allowing children to earn badges as they take part in activities. These achievements not only celebrate participation but also form the first steps of a longer Scouting journey, with progression badges following pupils as they grow. We are thrilled to share that children will be able to continue into Year 1 next year, with plans already underway to launch Beavers soon.

In true Scouting spirit, our young Squirrels will soon be proudly showcasing their uniforms. The distinctive red jumper, matching T-shirt, and neckerchief will become a familiar sight as our pupils embrace the values of teamwork, curiosity, and service that Scouting embodies. Uniforms will be available to order after registration, though there is no requirement for a full uniform until after Christmas.

Mr Rickett-Browne said:

“We want to continue to put on an exciting and varied programme to help the young people ‘Be Prepared’ for all they do in school, scouting and onwards as they grow. It has been fun to bring the idea of Scouting back to Wellingborough School, and starting from Squirrels in a place like this is just the most perfect opportunity.”

The Squirrel Scouts Drey began on Tuesday, 11th November 2025, with sessions priced at £40 per term (free of charge for the Michaelmas Term 2025). Spaces are currently limited to 12, however anyone inspired to volunteer as a leader is most welcome. Each new leader allows 6 more Squirrels to join.

At Wellingborough School, we are passionate about providing opportunities that help every child flourish right from the very start of their journey. The Squirrel Scouts Drey is more than just an after-school club, it is the start of a lifelong love of learning and exploration.

Join the adventure. Watch your little ones grow in confidence, skill, and spirit one badge at a time.
