Year 10 Geography Fieldwork Visit to the Ashbrook River

On Wednesday, our Year 10 GCSE Geographers embarked on a fieldwork visit to the Ashbrook River in Carding Mill Valley, where they collected primary data to support their Physical Geography studies. Despite wet and windy conditions, students demonstrated impressive resilience, maintaining focus and enthusiasm throughout the day.

Working collaboratively in groups, students investigated how key river characteristics change downstream. They visited a range of sites, measuring variables such as width, depth and velocity using equipment including tape measures, rulers, corks and a hydro-prop. This hands-on approach enabled them to gather, compare and begin interpreting data from different locations along the river.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to bring classroom learning to life, deepening students’ understanding of fluvial processes in a real-world context. Their teamwork, perseverance and engagement were evident throughout, as they worked carefully to ensure their data was both accurate and reliable.

To conclude the day, students visited one of Shropshire’s most notable waterfalls. With the sun finally making an appearance, it provided a memorable and well-deserved highlight to a highly successful day of fieldwork.
