Championing Student Safety in Sport

Wellingborough School Leads the Way in Contact Sport Safety for Pupils.

We are thrilled to share we have become the first independent school in the UK to implement a state-of-the-art concussion and welfare management system, in partnership with Luca Health.

The support and technology offered by Luca health, is at the forefront of a much needed transformation in how schools approach rugby and contact sports. With head injuries accounting for 25% of all sports injures, the partnership will give Wellingborough School the tools to manage head injuries with confidence and deliver our sports programmes safely.

Raising the Bar for School Sport Safety

The new system equips our coaches with advanced tools to identify, track, and manage head injuries. Using smartphone-based technology and expert medical oversight,  pupil’s recovery can be monitored through digital concussion reports which are also shared with parents, coaches and healthcare professionals.

With Luca health, every pupil at Wellingborough School will complete short, neurocognitive and ocular assessments via the Luca app to create a personal safety baseline. If a suspected head injury occurs, staff or parents can log the incident through the Luca dashboard. From there, Luca’s clinical team diagnoses and guides each child through a structured, step-by-step recovery protocol in tandem with the app.

A Vision for the Future of School Sport

We are excited to be using these tools which will help us in all our sports activities, from rugby to cricket. It will make sport safer and will give parents the confidence that pupil welfare comes first in our coaching programmes.

We have a proud tradition of competitive rugby as part of our broad co-curricular programme and this initiative ensures we are putting pupil welfare at the forefront of our sport programmes. We’re not only encouraging participation in contact sports but setting a new benchmark in pupil safety. Scott Benest, Director of Co-Curricular at Wellingborough School.
