Wellingborough Hosts Its First Festival of Science
To coincide with British Science Week, Wellingborough School held its inaugural Festival of Science Competition. The idea was spearheaded by one of our sixth form students, Anish (Y13).
Y5 primary school pupils from several schools, including Olney Middle School, Hayfield Cross Primary School and Henry Chichele Primary School, were invited to attend and compete in a fun general knowledge science quiz designed and run by Anish in the Upper Prep Hall. The visiting pupils had a wonderful time and were thoroughly impressed with their enthusiasm and the breadth of their scientific knowledge.
Visiting pupils were also treated to a dry ice workshop that took place in the Garrett building, where the demonstrations included dry ice bubbling beakers and a cloud fountain.
The visiting pupils also attended the Science and Technology fair, which received rave reviews from the visitors; highlights included a baking soda volcano, mentos and coke, the robot dog and, of course, the exotic animals on display.
Finally, at the conclusion of the day, the headmaster kindly joined us at the closing ceremony to award the winners of the quiz from Henry Chichele Primary School with their medals.
I think the day is best summed up by the fantastic feedback we received from the headteacher of one of the schools who visited.
“It was a wonderful opportunity for them to get involved, challenge themselves and enjoy STEM in such an engaging way. We’re very grateful to you and your team for organising such a brilliant event and for making the pupils feel so welcome. It was clearly a great success, and we really appreciate the effort that went into it.”
My thanks to Anish and his prefect team for their hard work and commitment throughout, and to the transport team for assisting in facilitating transport for the visiting schools.
We greatly look forward to hosting the competition again in the future.
