Geography Fieldwork Across the East End
As part of the Year 12 Geography syllabus, students have been exploring the topic of settlement dynamics. To bring this learning to life, we embarked on a brilliant field trip to London on 12th March, visiting key locations across the East End that have featured in our recent lessons.
We began our journey in the heart of the City of London, where students took in the traditional Central Business District with its striking mix of historic architecture. As we made our way towards Spitalfields Market, students were encouraged to look up and notice how the skyline gradually shifts—older buildings giving way to bold, modern designs. It was wonderful to see them spotting features we’ve discussed in the classroom.

At Spitalfields Market, students enjoyed some time to explore. Many reflected on how the area has evolved from a bustling fresh-produce market into a lively centre for independent shops, food stalls, and creative businesses—a perfect example of urban change in action.
Our walk continued to Brick Lane, where the group experienced the rich cultural vibrancy of the street. Here, we paused to consider the area’s industrial heritage and how history shapes the communities we see today. This led us to Arnold Circus in Shoreditch, where the beautiful Victorian architecture and green spaces sparked thoughtful discussion about gentrification and its impact on residents.
”Last week we went on a Geography trip to London. We learnt all about London’s CBD and how the residential areas are found around the edge of the city. It was so interesting to see how each place we visited has been regenerated to create a more inviting and environmentally friendly community. And of course, getting the chance to go to Westfield Shopping Centre topped off our fun day!”

A quick tube ride took us to Royal Victoria Dock. Once a vital part of London’s trading infrastructure, the area has been transformed into a regenerated waterfront, now home to the ExCeL Centre. Students were fascinated to see how remnants of the original dock structures have been preserved, providing a tangible link to the past.
Our final stop was Stratford, where students explored the influence of the Westfield Shopping Centre and the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games. They considered how these major developments have shaped the local area – socially, economically, and environmentally – reflecting on both the opportunities created and the challenges faced by communities.
It truly was a fantastic day out. Students engaged brilliantly throughout, making insightful connections to their unit on the changing structure of urban settlements. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and thoughtful discussions made the trip a real highlight of the term.
“On the Geography trip last week, I learnt about the regeneration of the Docklands and Stratford. We visited lots of different sites, including the City of London, Spitalfields Market, Brick Lane and Arnold Circus. At each stop, we made notes about how the area had changed and been regenerated. My highlight of the day was visiting Spitalfields Market and Westfield Shopping Centre.”
