Today, Friday 5th June, Wellingborough School pupils and staff came together to mark World Environment Day with a community litter-picking initiative in partnership with Lodestone House and SUEZ. This brought together senior pupils, Lower Prep children and members of our catering team. The event reflected a shared commitment to environmental responsibility and meaningful community engagement.
A Focus on Environmental Stewardship
The event aimed to promote the key message “waste should be seen as a resource, not a problem”. By removing litter from the environment and sorting it responsibly, pupils helped prevent pollution and supported more sustainable waste management practices.
Participants separated collected waste into three categories:
- General waste
- Food waste
- Recyclables
This process helped maximise recycling efficiency while encouraging pupils to think critically about how everyday materials are used and disposed of. For example, clean items such as plastic bottles, cans and paper can be recovered and reused, while damaged or contaminated materials were correctly placed in general waste to protect recycling streams.
The Challenge in Action
After being split into teams, the pupils began their two-hour litter-picking challenge. Equipped with litter pickers and high-visibility clothing, they worked efficiently across the local area.
At the end of the event:
- Each team recorded the number of bags collected across the three waste categories
- Participation numbers were logged, including both pupils and staff
- Results were submitted, with recognition for teams achieving the greatest impact relative to their size
“The Lodestone House litter-picking event is particularly important to me because it brings our Garden, Kitchen, and Classroom ethos to life in a meaningful and practical way. I am incredibly proud to see my team and students coming together with such enthusiasm and purpose. Moments like these demonstrate the power of continued partnerships and show how small actions can have a lasting impact. By working together to care for our local environment, we are helping young people understand the importance of responsibility and making a positive contribution to the world around them.” – Kirstie Brimm, Catering Manager
